First time mama question - the BIG stink

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Some of you may remember we booted the Diaper Genie to the curb for being a slacker, so we currently put M's unmentionables in our main garbage can. We take out our garbage daily, and yet the stench is infiltrating mi casa!

Besides walking each diaper to the outside trash bin after every changing, does anyone have suggestions? I've tried some different air fresheners but haven't found one that is tough enough for my boy.

And while you are thinking of sweetly scented wisdom to pass on to me, please pray for those who REALLY live in unsanitary stench ALL the time. I lifted the photo below from Hannah's site (don't think she'll mind), and it is from her time in Cambodia. She described this scene as "the alley of nightmarish smells."

Can you imagine raising your baby here? Your toddler playing in the midst of this filth? If God so leads your heart to do MORE than pray for these mamas and their babies, I encourage you to contact Hannah to see how you can help (Hannah@hopechest.org)

edited2add: hey everyone, thanks for the suggestions! i actually have those little bags for when we are out&about, and i guess that's the way to go...buy them in bulk. i hadn't moved in that direction because of the sheer quantity we would go through (seriously, one day i would have needed 6 of them!), but it seems to be the best option.

Toys R US has a box of tiny diaper bags. Each goes into its own little baggy. Tie it up and put in trash. HELPS A LOT!

Ah, they have fragrant smelling doggy doo-doo bags that you could tie them up in. Each is scented. Just an idea. =0)

Sorry that I can't give better advice. I keep grocery bags in a drawer in Sophia's room. Stinky diapers get tied up in those and go out to the main trash bin, or to our kitchen trash which is taken out every day.

Such a sad picture. I was just reading in Hope Lives about a girl who grew up in a trash dump in Haiti. That is beyond my comprehension.

scented ziplock bags work.

we use the diaper baggies from target or babies r us and tie each dirty diaper up and then evetually get it to the garbage can we have specifically for diapers right outside our door in our garage. the blue baggies work enough so that if you don't feel like taking it out that very instant, it won't make you go too crazy...but i definitely don't put them in my regular trash as they will eventually smell pretty bad.

hey i'm a little late here, but we have a bucket in the garage and we just throw them in there and empty it daily.

the bag idea is good, but, for me it's easier to walk to the garage and throw it in and at the end of day, it's nice to get out of the house, at least for a split second.

just a thought....

I keep grocery store plastic bags handy and also a small garbage can right out the door from the house to garage. I wrap them in the bag and just open the door and toss. My hubby then will empty the small can to the main garbage every couple of days. At least that is what I USED to do. Woohoo!!

I know what you mean about not-so-helpful diaper pails. We just abandoned William's useless diaper pail. We're now throwing them in the kitchen trash can. Usually, I have a ton of coffee grinds from DH's morning brew that work well to counteract the smell of the stinky poo diapers. The pee ones are mostly pretty innocuous.

Hi Tish,

Are you from TX?....I read something you posted back several days that made me think maybe you were a fellow TEXAN. You mentioned Buckner...was Buckner your agency. We partnered with Buckner for our adoption. They are out of Dallas and I thought we might be neighbors :-)

I hope you and your precious little one have a great weekend!

I use sandwich size zip lock baggies that I buy in bulk at Costco. Cuts down the stench enormously!

you can flush the poo down the toilet before you tie it up, that cuts down quite a bit. Since i've started using the G diapers, I don't have this problem anymore as all the poo ones get flushed.

I tie the really stinky ones up in plastic grocery bags. Cheaper than buying them. :)

ICK! I know what you mean! I've always hated this problem. We've tried every imaginable diaper system and after a while they always stink. So, we've settled on flushing the poopies first, then sealing the nasty item in a ziplock baggie or a doggie doo baggie and then taking out the trash every day. Still, I feel like the nursery reeks... *sigh* :@
