and, yes, we have one whole room (well, two, since it is a dining/living room) that is completely empty except for toys...not a good precedent

How sweet! And don't worry, we have a good 4 rooms totally full of toys, but I have just reclaimed my living room!!!! (okay, not really, there is currently a home made tent in it. I did reclaim it for 1 day though.)
That is just priceless!!
You know, it's funny that you said your living room/dining is empty, because in one video we didn't see a lot of furniture. We just assumed you all were minimalists! Unfortunately, that's not us!
